artists - turned wood art

Joyful Image features original turned art by Barry Gaugler and Bridget O'Rourke. The company was started in 2002 in the Rocky Mountains outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Joyful Image is now located in Maine. Here, in addition to aspen, are plentiful forests containing a variety of hardwoods.

We gather wood locally - searching out dead and down trees, especially trees with spalting or burls. The wood we choose is not prime for use as lumber or firewood. As avid bird watchers and naturalists, we do not disturb logs that woodpeckers or other forest dwellers have chosen for their own purposes.

Our turnings highlight the beauty of wood in its natural state ~ free of unnecessary embellishments. Nature's "imperfections" create character and make each piece of our turned art unique. We favor clean lines on classic and organic shapes. Each piece is numbered and signed.

Our intent is to create art that celebrates the beauty of nature.
